Resume Tips for QA Automation

Your resume gets 10 seconds of initial scanning. If the recruiter does not see the right keywords and structure in those 10 seconds, you are rejected before any interview. This lesson covers exactly what to include, what to avoid, and how to write bullet points that get callbacks.

Sections in Order (Top to Bottom)

1. Professional Summary — 3-4 lines summarizing your experience, skills, and key achievement. No "seeking a challenging position" — be specific.
2. Technical Skills — organized by category: Languages, Automation Tools, Frameworks, CI/CD, Reporting, Version Control, Build Tools. Keywords here get matched by ATS scanners.
3. Professional Experience — reverse chronological. Each role has company name, title, dates, and 4-6 bullet points with accomplishments (not just responsibilities).
4. Projects — if you lack work experience, list personal projects with GitHub links. A well-built framework on GitHub speaks louder than a certification.
5. Education — degree, university, year. Keep it brief.
6. Certifications (optional) — ISTQB, any relevant certifications. Only if you have them.

Common Resume Mistakes

1. Listing every tool you have heard of — only include tools you can discuss in an interview. If you list Playwright but cannot explain how it works, it hurts more than it helps.
2. No measurable impact — "automated tests" says nothing. "Automated 200+ test cases reducing regression effort from 3 days to 2 hours" tells a story.
3. Resume longer than 2 pages — for 1-5 years experience, keep it to 1 page. For 5+ years, 2 pages maximum.
4. Generic professional summary — "Seeking a challenging position in a dynamic organization" is meaningless. Be specific: "QA Automation Engineer with 3 years of experience building Selenium frameworks in Java."
5. No GitHub link — if you claim to have built a framework, where is the code? A GitHub profile with a well-structured project is the strongest proof of your skills.
6. Typos and formatting issues — if you cannot QA your own resume, why should they trust you to QA their product?
