Practice: Build Your Own Framework

Time to build. You have all the pieces — now assemble them into a working framework. Use the TesterRank practice portals as your test application.

Exercise 1: Framework Setup

1. Create a Maven project with the pom.xml from this chapter.
2. Set up the full folder structure: base, pages, tests, utils, listeners, config.
3. Create config.properties with base.url pointing to https://testerrank.com.
4. Build ConfigReader with system property override support.
5. Build DriverFactory with Chrome, Firefox, and Edge support.
6. Build BaseTest with ThreadLocal WebDriver, @BeforeMethod, and @AfterMethod.
7. Build BasePage with click, type, getText, isDisplayed, waitForVisible, and scrollToElement.

Exercise 2: Banking Portal Test Suite

1. Create LoginPage, DashboardPage, and TransferPage with all locators and actions.
2. Write LoginTests: testSuccessfulLogin (smoke), testInvalidCredentials (regression), testEmptyFields (regression), testLogout (smoke).
3. Write BankingE2ETests: testCompleteBankingFlow (smoke) covering login, balance check, transfer, and logout.
4. Add data-driven login test using CSV data with DataProvider.
5. Add proper logging to every test step.
6. Tag all tests with groups: smoke, regression.

Exercise 3: Shopping Portal Test Suite

1. Create ShopHomePage, CatalogPage, CartPage, and CheckoutPage.
2. Write tests: testHomePageLoads, testProductSearch, testAddToCart, testRemoveFromCart, testCompleteCheckoutFlow.
3. Add data-driven search test using CSV with multiple search terms.
4. Create a testng.xml that runs both Banking and Shopping tests with parallel="classes".

Exercise 4: Listeners and Reporting

1. Create TestListener implementing ITestListener with screenshot on failure.
2. Create RetryAnalyzer with configurable retry count.
3. Set up Log4j2 with console and file appenders.
4. Register the listener in testng.xml.
5. Run the full suite and verify: logs are generated, screenshots are captured on failure, and retry works.

Exercise 5: The CI Challenge

1. Run all tests in headless mode: mvn test -Dheadless=true
2. Run only smoke tests: mvn test -Dgroups=smoke
3. Run against a different URL: mvn test -Dbase.url=https://testerrank.com
4. Run with Firefox: mvn test -Dbrowser=firefox -Dheadless=true
5. Verify that all config overrides work correctly without changing any Java code.
